Forest adds Pensioners to ‘Friends of the Forest’ e-bike scheme

Forest, one of London’s most cost-effective shared e-bike providers, is broadening its 'Friends of the Forest' discount programme to encompass individuals aged 60 and above.

The advantages of cycling at an advanced age are extensively documented, with research indicating that individuals aged between 50 and 83 derive comparable health benefits from riding an electric bike as younger individuals do from using a traditional pedal bike.

However, the National Travel Survey reveals that under 25% of those over 60 own a bike, in contrast to nearly 50% of individuals aged between 40 and 49. In the realm of bike sharing, merely 10% of e-bike users are over 55, as per a recent report by COMO UK.

Responding to input from London's borough authorities, where councillors expressed interest in subsidising older users, Forest has now included those over 60 in its established 'Friends of the Forest' initiative.

Launched in 2022, the 'Friends of the Forest' scheme offers NHS workers, students, and emergency service workers a 20% reduction on all rides.

To enrol in the scheme, a user must:

  • Visit the "Free Minutes" section in the Forest app.
  • Select the 'Friends of the Forest' option.
  • Upload a photograph of their valid ID (proof of age over 60, student ID, NHS ID, or Blue Light Card) and a selfie with the same ID next to their face.
  • Await a confirmation email, which should arrive within 48 hours, confirming their enrolment and granting them a 20% discount on all rides.

This extension to include those aged 60 and above is in effect from the 4th January.

Laura Elms, Head of Sustainability at Forest, commented: “Following local feedback, we realised we were missing an important demographic from our discount scheme. We want to make our service as accessible and affordable as possible for everyone. This is particularly important for older generations who are underrepresented in shared bike schemes but benefit disproportionately from the health outcomes of cycling.”
