Top tips for UK SMEs looking to innovate and thrive on the global stage

For many UK SMEs, the challenge is not a lack of ideas. It’s finding the support, expertise, and opportunities needed to turn those ideas into commercial success.

The Floow’s journey demonstrates what is possible when businesses embrace those opportunities. Founded in Sheffield in 2012, we have transitioned from insurance telematics into road safety intelligence, with the capability to deploy to over 140 countries – much of it built through our involvement with Horizon Europe, one of the world’s largest research and innovation funding programme.

As SMEs look to scale beyond their current market, it is important to consider these three key ideas.

Don’t limit yourself to your core market

It can be hugely beneficial to look beyond your immediate market. Many businesses focus primarily on improving existing products and serving existing customers. While that is important, some of the most significant growth opportunities can emerge from applying established expertise to entirely new sectors, challenges, or customer groups. The Floow’s expansion from insurance telematics into road safety intelligence illustrates how capabilities developed in one sector can create value in another. Research programmes provide a relatively low-risk environment to explore these adjacent opportunities, helping businesses expand their reach while strengthening their long-term prospects.

Use partnerships to accelerate innovation

International collaboration can feel daunting for smaller businesses, particularly those with limited resources. However, partnerships often provide access to specialist skills, technologies, and markets that would otherwise be beyond reach. By working alongside global experts and organisations from different sectors, SMEs can accelerate innovation, improve credibility and broaden their commercial horizons. The relationships built during collaborative projects frequently continue long after the formal funding period has ended, creating lasting opportunities for growth.

Build on your strengths

While growth may come from entering new markets, it should be built on capabilities you already possess. Growth doesn’t have to mean reinventing your business. In fact, the opposite is often true. The most impactful innovations tend to emerge when organisations build upon what they already do well. For The Floow, expertise in behavioural analytics and mobility data remained at the heart of our growth journey. Horizon Europe did not require us to develop an entirely new set of capabilities; it provided new avenues through which our existing expertise could be applied, refined, and commercialised.

Developing new technologies often requires long-term investment, patience, and collaboration across multiple sectors. Bringing research into commercial deployment can be a complex process; particularly in industries affected by rapidly evolving regulation or public policy. Success frequently depends on sustained cooperation between business, government, and academia.

The UK remains exceptionally well positioned to support this type of innovation. It benefits from world-class universities, a thriving technology ecosystem, and a strong culture of entrepreneurship. Combined with access to international programmes such as Horizon Europe, UK SMEs have significant opportunities to innovate, compete, and grow on a global stage.
