Top Malmö startups

Malmö is a city filled with innovation. It is home to almost 40,000 businesses, has a large proportion of international talent, and is Sweden’s youngest and fastest growing city. The city of Malmö fosters innovative companies, and plans on creating a ‘Startup District’ particularly for this reason.

I was lucky enough to be invited by the City of Malmö’s Business and External Relations department to visit the city to learn more about the business ecosystem and to meet some of the brightest startups in the region.

Here is a list of some of the brightest startups from Malmö.

MedBeat

MedBeat is a medtech startup that was founded in 2018 and is headquartered in Malmö, Sweden. It has developed a user-friendly, non-invasive device for continuous electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring. This wearable device can be attached to a user's chest to monitor and record cardiac activity uninterrupted for at least seven days, providing comprehensive medical insights and clinical accuracy.

After the seven days, MedBeat's specialist doctors in clinical physiology interpret the data, and a report will be sent to you within a week.

Minimal App

Minimal App is an AI pattern predictive technology that enables women to embrace their menopause. The app uses data that has already been collected from your own personal wearable device to predict and help manage symptoms of the menopause. An advantage of being able to track menopause symptoms is knowing when a doctor needs to become involved, as symptoms can often be misinterpreted as other health issues, so knowing the cause ensures peace of mind.

Jacqueline Nuwame, Founder and CEO of Minimal App, founded the startup based on her own personal struggles and frustrations with the lack of resources available for women experiencing the menopause.

Rekonnect

Rekonnect is a vertical SaaS startup for the medtech industry. Its mission is to revolutionise the medtech industry by harnessing the power of data-driven insights to foster innovation within the industry and elevate patient care. It links medical devices, healthcare professionals, and patients through its system, to ensure that the correct information is available at the time it is needed.

It connects teams, devices, and data in one cohesive platform, to empower healthcare professionals to make informed decisions that optimise patient outcomes.

Enjay Systems

Enjay Systems is a Swedish greentech startup that specialises in energy recovery from polluted airstreams in challenging environments. Its flagship product, Lepido, is a heat exchanger designed to capture and reuse energy from contaminated exhaust air, such as those from restaurant kitchens, laundries, and industrial sites.

It’s technology allows businesses to reduce their energy consumption and lower their CO₂ emissions.

Re:meat

Re:meat, a Swedish startup founded in 2022 by Jacob Schaldemose Peterson and Gittan Schiöld, specialises in producing cultivated meat – meat grown from animal cells without the need for traditional livestock farming. Its mission is to promote a sustainable food system by minimising the environmental footprint of conventional meat production.

By leveraging cellular agriculture, Re:meat aims to deliver high-quality meat alternatives that use significantly less land and water, while producing fewer greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional methods. The company focuses on developing technologies to enable the large-scale production of sustainable and cost-effective beef mince.
