Tech startup to disrupt the divorce process with £488k investment
amicable, the tech startup disrupting the family law sector, has raised £488k in funding from existing and new angel investors. The news comes just a few months after a high court judge ruled in favour of amicable’s approach to divorce and separation that focuses on supporting couples through the process and removes the need for couples to instruct two separate lawyers.
The funding has been raised during a period of high growth for the business. In the past month alone, the business has seen a 200% year on year increase in enquires, owing to the lack of high street legal divorce services available during lockdown and a desire amongst Brits to untie the knot amicably.
Launched in 2015, amicable removes lawyers from the divorce process and democratises the experience, helping couples navigate the emotional journey of parting ways. It is a fully online service, which uses advanced technology and automation to provide a more efficient and cost-effective solution.
The funding generated through this period will be used to invest in the growth of the amicable team and on expanding the technology to help more couples throughout all the stages of divorce and separation.
Commenting on the closing of funding, Pip Wilson, CEO and co-founder of amicable, said: “We are incredibly pleased to have raised almost £500k from a fantastic group of Angel investors who believe in our mission of changing the way the world divorces. There is no doubt there is public appetite for a new way of managing divorce and separation and amicable offers exactly this.
“The funding will provide huge opportunities to grow the amicable team, while also helping advance our tech capabilities which will result in us being able to help thousands of more people to separate amicably. We have always blended the technology and human aspect of our service and this is a continued focus for the future. The funding will help to make our technology smarter and faster while also maintaining the excellent service we pride ourselves on.
“We continue to be committed to changing the narrative around divorce, from one that fosters acrimony and tension, to one that is collaborative and understanding. The British publics' mindset around divorces is changing and we are incredibly excited to be at the forefront of this.”
This announcement comes just one week after ‘no fault divorce’, the largest reform to divorce law in more than fifty years, gained Royal Assent. The amendments introduced will allow couples to have kinder, more amicable divorces, reducing conflict during the divorce process. A joint petition to the court citing irretrievable breakdown of the marriage will allow former couples to start divorce proceedings amicably, greatly reducing stress and preserving mental wellbeing as much as possible.
amicable’s online services include a free app to help with parenting and financial plans, 24/7 support from Alex, the business’ AI driven chatbot, and an online customer dashboard.
