How female founders can amplify their voices through communications platforms

In the lead-up to International Women’s Day, a day dedicated to acknowledging, recognising, reflecting, acting, speaking up, celebrating, and empowering women, I’m reminded of the immense power we each hold through PR and our own publishing platforms – such as our social media profiles, personal blogs, websites, newsletters, podcasts, video channels, online courses/webinars. These all allow us to create and share our stories and messages directly with the world.

Incredible, really, when you stop and think about it. We now have the power to publish our thoughts, ideas and news, directly from the palm of our hand – with just a phone, we can reach audiences across the globe, share our stories, and create real-time impact. For those with the accessibility to this technology, it means that our voices can be amplified in a way that was unimaginable just a few decades ago.

They are not just tools for amplifying our voices; they are powerful vehicles for shaping narratives, driving change, and creating lasting impact.

As a Communications and PR expert, I believe it’s time for women startup founders and entrepreneurs to consider how we can maximise our platforms in order to make sure our voices are heard.

Here are some key ways we can use PR, communications and social media to amplify our messages, build influence and take up space with confidence.

  1. Know your why and stay focused on it: every powerful communication strategy starts with a clear purpose. What story do you want to tell? What impact do you want to create? Whether you’re advocating for gender equality, launching a business, or sharing your journey, defining your ‘why’ shapes how you communicate and where you focus your efforts. Then stay focused on it by ensuring you are maintaining steady progress toward your ‘why’ and your goals. When you are intentional and clear, your message resonates more deeply and creates a lasting impact.
  2. Show up – don’t be anonymous: are you fully showing up, or are you hiding behind your brand? As a startup business owner, entrepreneur or campaigner, putting your name and face at the forefront of your social media presence, website, and blogs builds trust and authenticity. A logo alone won’t foster meaningful connections – people want to know you. By sharing your personal journey, values, and expertise, you humanise your brand and make it relatable. Clients, customers, and followers are more likely to engage with someone they feel connected to. Ask yourself: How can I add more of me to my online presence?
  3. Eliminate hesitant language: the words we use shape how we’re perceived and how we perceive ourselves. Eliminating hesitant language – such as; “perhaps,” or “just” - makes a significant difference in how confidently we communicate. Saying "I just wanted to check in" or "I'm just a small business owner" sounds almost apologetic and subtly downplays who you are. Whether in meetings, emails, or social media posts, speaking with conviction builds trust, strengthens leadership and ensures your voice carries weight.
  4. Leverage social media for connection, not just promotion: social media is one of the most powerful platforms for amplifying your voice, reaching a global audience, and fostering genuine engagement. Success isn’t just about frequent posting – it’s about creating meaningful connections. While promoting your work is important, content that informs, inspires and engages will build lasting trust and credibility. Share your expertise, experiences and insights. Also, engage in conversations and uplift others too – it’s a two way stream!
  5. Use thought leadership to stand out: what do you want to be known for? What unique insights can you offer? Thought leadership is a powerful way to build credibility and position yourself as a go-to expert in your industry. By sharing valuable knowledge and offering fresh perspectives, you establish yourself as a trusted voice. Start with your own blog, LinkedIn posts, or a podcast, then expand to guest articles, webinars, media pieces and speaking engagements. Thought leadership is about being the “go-to” person - someone people turn to for advice and insights. Small, consistent actions build influence over time.
  6. Measure, adapt, and keep evolving: communication is an ongoing process. Take time to evaluate what’s working. Which posts are resonating most? What kind of engagement are you getting? Use analytics tools to track performance, listen to audience feedback and refine your strategy. Stay flexible – social media, PR, and digital trends evolve quickly, and adapting to change will help you remain visible and influential.

Your voice matters – own it!

On this International Women’s Day, remember: your voice is powerful, and your message deserves to be heard. Whether through social media, PR, or thought leadership, take up space, share your story, and claim your seat at the table.

Happy International Women’s Day!
