Footballer Chris Smalling launches VC consultancy to invest in planet-friendly startups
Athlete and investor Chris Smalling has announced the launch of ForGood, a venture capital consultancy investing in companies that are addressing the world’s largest environmental challenges such as climate change.
Joining Smalling as co-founders and Partners at ForGood, are Sebastiano Cossia Castiglioni, an entrepreneur, investor, activist, and advisor to businesses, governments, and nonprofits around the world, and Rebecca Wheeler, a seasoned marketing leader, and Founder of certified B-Corp creative agency Library.
ForGood is a purpose driven family of investors, creators and storytellers committed to scaling ideas to build a better future and will initially focus on impactful sustainable investments in ambitious startups and entrepreneurs with disruptive, high growth business ideas. ForGood will invest between £50,000 to £1m+ in capital in pre-seed to Series A businesses in the UK and globally.
In recent years, high profile individuals and investors such as Beyonce, Natalie Portman, Leonardo Dicaprio and Drake, have actively supported and championed the growth of sustainable and socially responsible companies, using their status as force for good.
ForGood unites and empowers high profile individuals, who they call ‘Changemakers’ to invest in planet-centric ideas, products and services. Making it easy for Changemakers to invest, ForGood’s proposition connects athletes, musicians, entertainers and high profile personalities with early stage businesses focused on tackling social and environmental issues.
The influential personalities part of ForGood's network are all driven by Smalling and his team’s mission to ‘to build a better future’ and have a positive impact on the planet.
Chris Smalling, AS Roma centre-back and Partner at ForGood commented: “I want to look back on my life as someone who achieved lots on the pitch, but also someone who made a difference on a much greater scale. We’re on a simple but huge mission to transform the world for the better and drive a global movement for good. Investing in a more sustainable future shouldn’t have any barriers, and at ForGood we believe that connecting people with a common cause has the power to bring change on a global scale. We want to play a key role in accelerating an ecosystem that actively invests and champions the next generation of responsible businesses, with the ambition to drive a movement of doing things ‘for good’.”
Smalling set up ForGood to inspire fellow Changemakers and share his insight into the opportunities they have at their fingertips to help shape a more sustainable future. The AS Roma centre-back and England international switched to a plant-based lifestyle six years ago and has personally already invested in planet-friendly and health-related startups, including pineapple-based leather business Piñatex, frozen food company allplants, and natural energy drink Virtue Drinks.
Sebastiano Cossia Castiglioni, Partner at ForGood added: “The future of our children and our planet depends on us and on the choices we make right now, today, not tomorrow. ForGood is on a mission to promote intelligent, radical change, rethinking supply chains and production systems. With the aim of ending animal suffering, and by promoting a cruelty-free, healthy, vegan lifestyle, we will inspire and support a new generation of entrepreneurs and businesses. ForGood is committed to building a portfolio of exciting companies and ideas, who share our values and ethics. I’m honoured to be working alongside Chris, Rebecca and our Changemakers, and to be part of a team that’s focused on empathy, progress, and change.”
Experts in the investment and sustainability world, ForGood’s wider team includes VCs, investors, strategists, food scientists and brand marketeers with backgrounds in consultancies, funds and startups. Cossia Castiglioni, Partner at ForGood, is a global authority on plant-based business and investment, and is dedicated to the worldwide promotion of an animal-free food supply. He founded venture capital firm Vegan Capital, and co-founded Planthesis and Natural Order Acquisition Corp.
The exclusive investor community also includes a consultancy arm that provides brand growth services for ForGood portfolio brands, which will be headed up by Wheeler and a team of advisors.
