Zapp secures twin patents for i300 electric urban motorcycle
Zapp Electric Vehicles, the UK-based maker of high-performance electric two-wheelers, has secured European patents for two key components of its i300 electric urban motorcycle, which is set for its first customer deliveries later this year.
The European Patent Office has granted patents for the i300’s Z-shaped exoskeleton and removable front fender. These patents underscore Zapp’s commitment to innovation, aligning with the brand’s strategic goals of delivering top-tier design, performance, sustainability, and customer experience.
The i300’s signature Z-shaped exoskeleton, crafted from anodised aluminium, represents a breakthrough in motorcycle chassis design. Mounted on an underbone, this single-piece structure replaces the traditional multi-tube frame, reducing weight and lowering the centre of gravity for improved handling and safety. The exoskeleton not only contributes to the bike's dynamic performance but also forms the basis of Zapp’s award-winning design aesthetic. Additionally, it simplifies assembly, decreases the number of components, and creates extra storage space under the seat. This innovative design paves the way for future models without the need for significant retooling.
Zapp’s second patent covers the i300’s removable front fender, which introduces unprecedented customisation options to the two-wheeler market. Owners can easily swap out the front fender for a new colour, allowing for endless personalisation possibilities. Zapp plans to enhance this feature by collaborating with artists and cultural icons to produce limited-edition fender collections. These customisation services will be provided by ‘Zappers,’ who will visit customers at their home or workplace in branded Zapp vans to perform the fender exchange.
The European patents (EP4058343 for the seat-supporting structure and EP4051563 for the front fairing) further solidify Zapp’s reputation for world-class technology and design, as showcased in its flagship model, the i300 Carbon.
Swin Chatsuwan, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Zapp, said: “The notification of not one but two European patents is enormously gratifying for Zapp and proves the innovative nature of the technology and design underpinning the brand’s i300 electric urban motorcycle. Our exoskeleton transforms two-wheeled chassis technology and is key to endowing the zero-emission i300 with the convenience of a step-though scooter and the dynamic performance of a larger motorcycle.
“Zapp’s patented removable front fenders will also revolutionise the two-wheeled vehicle category by offering customers a range of colourway personalisation options previously the exclusive domain of the supercar and hypercar sectors. The exoskeleton and the removable front fender are pivotal to Zapp’s determination to transform the two-wheeler segment with superbly designed, technically advanced, zero-emission, fun-to-ride products. However, these are just two of more than sixty novel technical aspects of the i300, which will further amplify the product’s considerable customer appeal as we move towards first deliveries commencing later this year.”
