Workspace of the issue: Cubo Work
Cubo is a provider of bespoke flex offices and co-working spaces, boasting 12 sites across the UK, including Manchester, Newcastle, Leeds, Birmingham, Edinburgh, and Glasgow.
Discussing the workspace, Rebecca Brough, Co-Founder and CMO of Cubo, said: “What differentiates Cubo from other flexible workspace operators is our innovative approach, workplace design, and member experience.
“We have changed the face of the well-established serviced office model, creating dynamic environments with a new focus on enhancing member experience.”
Most recently, Cubo became the first company to acquire one of WeWork’s six provincial sites in the UK, taking over three floors at No.1 Spinningfields, which houses more than 1,100 desks.
Cubo’s vision and purpose
Cubo is driven by its mission and purpose.
Brough explained: “Cubo’s vision is to redefine the traditional serviced office experience to meet the changing needs of modern businesses and their employees.
“We have created an experience-led lifestyle offer to meet the changing needs of businesses – from hot desking to designated desks, private offices, or entire floors, all available on flexible terms.”
With the landscape of work constantly shifting, as a workspace provider, it is important to keep up with new working trends to ensure that what you’re providing is what customers want and need.
“Our ultimate goal is to create dynamic, flexible workspaces, which support productivity and collaboration.”
Cubo’s origin
In early 2020, Cubo was launched by property investors Marc and Rebecca Brough.
Rebecca recalled the moment: “Marc knew the workplace was shifting and there was a real appetite for agile working, driven by the evolving nature of the world of work, supported by rapidly advancing technology.
“Two years before the pandemic prompted a shift in working patterns, Marc took the strategic decision to launch a high-end boutique serviced office offer – and Cubo was born. Cubo was [officially] launched in February 2020, shortly before the Covid pandemic.
“The first acquisition was a 24,000 sq. ft Grade II Listed building in Derby, which was sympathetically restored.”
Why do startups, founders, and businesses use Cubo?
Cubo provides a flexible environment that meets the needs of a wide range of professionals, from founders and startups to large corporates, all from a broad range of sectors.
Brough explained why she believes Cubo is used by such a range of people: “At the heart of Cubo's appeal is its vibrant community which provides opportunities for connection and collaboration, allowing businesses of all types to work together and grow.
“Businesses choose Cubo over our competitors because we understand that the modern workplace is about more than just a place to work – it’s about creating an environment that enhances productivity and overall wellbeing. We offer a very personal service for anyone looking for an office at Cubo and will often create office spaces tailored to their needs.
“We understand that work-life balance is crucial, so we offer amenities that promote wellbeing, such as fitness centres and wellness rooms. We also stage regular member networking events that enrich the professional and personal lives of our members.”
The workspaces
Cubo’s 12 workspaces are dotted across the UK and are unified in the facilities and uses they offer. A Cubo membership allows members to access to a range of services and facilities.
Brough said: “Member benefits include large communal spaces, private areas, meeting rooms, private telephone booths, kitchens, an inclusive barista service with beer and fizz on tap, along with a programme of free networking events. Cubo members can also take advantage of an experienced front of house team.
“Our spaces are also equipped with breakout spaces and recreational areas that foster a relaxed atmosphere, crucial for promoting creativity and productivity. Some of our workspaces also have their own gyms and wellness centres.”
Cubo aims on not only being a high-quality workspace provider, but also a community. “Our emphasis on creating a supportive and inclusive atmosphere ensures that everyone, from startup founders to established businesses, feels welcome and empowered to succeed,” commented Brough.
What’s next for Cubo?
With so much already going on at Cubo, the future for the workspace provider is bright.
“We have ambitious growth plans and aim to reinforce our presence in all leading provincial centres by 2025, re-enforcing our commitment to revolutionising the world of work in the regions.
“We are excited to be expanding our footprint with new workspaces in vibrant locations. Ambitious plans are underway to almost double
Cubo’s footprint nationally, a growth strategy backed by investment firm Literacy Capital.
“We also aim to take the Cubo brand internationally.”
With expansion on the mind, Cubo are also dedicated to keeping in line with its original vision and mission.
“We are excited to continue pushing boundaries, creating encouraging environments, and shaping the future of the world of work.”
