Wales challenges London's tech dominance
Tramshed Tech, Welsh innovation hub, will host a business event at The Shard in London next month, aimed at connecting London-based investors and corporate innovation leaders with opportunities in Wales' rapidly growing tech ecosystem.
‘Invest in Innovation: The Welsh Opportunity’ will take place on Thursday, June 12th from 16:00 to 18:30, bringing together influential business leaders and decision-makers to explore partnership and investment pathways within the Welsh tech ecosystem.
The exclusive event is expected to feature an opening address from David Stevens CBE, Co-Founder and former CEO of Admiral Group. Under Stevens' leadership, Admiral grew from a Welsh startup into a leading FTSE 100 company headquartered in Wales, now employing thousands across the region and demonstrating Wales' capacity to nurture globally competitive businesses.
Attendees will engage with an exclusive panel featuring key decision-makers who are actively fostering corporate-startup collaboration and investment opportunities in Wales. The panel includes Chris Skinner, Ecosystem Manager at Barclays Eagle Labs, who provides invaluable support and mentorship to tech founders across Wales; Jessica Phillips-Harris, Senior Manager for Wales at the British Business Bank's UK Network, whose expertise in regional funding mechanisms helps businesses navigate co-investment opportunities; and John Cordrey, Investment Director at Foresight Group, which manages the £50 million equity fund for the British Business Bank in Wales. His regional investment portfolio demonstrates the fund’s commitment to scaling high-growth businesses outside of London.
The event will also feature Jack J Williams, Founder of iTero Gaming and current Head of Gaming Technology at GIANTX Esports. Williams, a former financial analyst, founded iTero from his cottage in Cardigan, Wales, developing an AI-powered coaching platform for League of Legends players that provides real-time feedback and strategic insights. After participating in one of Tramshed Tech's award-winning innovation programmes, his company caught the attention of global esports organisation GIANTX, resulting in a multi-million-pound acquisition. His firsthand account will demonstrate how AI innovation cultivated in Wales can rapidly scale to international markets, creating substantial returns for investors and strategic acquisition opportunities for forward-thinking corporates.
The event will culminate with a presentation on partnership pathways, providing attendees with actionable ways to engage with the Welsh tech ecosystem. This final session will outline specific routes for London-based businesses seeking to capitalise on strategic opportunities within Wales' emerging tech sector.
Attendees will gain insights into the strategic advantages of investing in Wales, including competitive operational costs, access to specialised talent pools, and innovative funding mechanisms that are generating measurable returns for early adopters.
"Being based in Tramshed Tech gives us direct access to the most innovative startups and scale-ups in Wales," said Chris Skinner, panellist and Ecosystem Manager at Barclays Eagle Labs. "Through our partnership with Tramshed Tech, I've witnessed firsthand the quality of innovation happening outside London. This event at The Shard is a perfect opportunity for London-based investors to connect with the exceptional talent and opportunities emerging from the Welsh tech ecosystem. The impact we're making together in Wales is significant, and I'm excited to help showcase this potential to a wider audience."
"As strategic partners of London Tech Week 2025, Tramshed Tech is bridging Wales' dynamic innovation ecosystem with London's unparalleled investment landscape," said Louise Harris, Co-Founder and CEO at Tramshed Tech. "This high-profile event at The Shard, our third annual showcase during London Tech Week, represents more than networking; it's about unlocking capital flows westward to fuel the exceptional growth opportunities emerging from Wales. By connecting forward-thinking London based corporations and investors with Welsh innovation, we're strengthening the entire UK tech sector and challenging the notion that transformative tech must be London-centric to succeed globally."
The event is supported by Foresight Group, who are hosting at their prestigious Shard venue, and Tech Wales Advocates, further demonstrating the collaborative approach being taken to showcase Welsh innovation opportunities to London-based investors.
The event is specifically designed for corporate innovation leaders looking to expand beyond London, investment professionals seeking higher returns in emerging ecosystems, and executives exploring cost-effective partnerships with high-growth Welsh ventures.
