Startups looking to recruit new experts can now take easier advantage of the Kickstart scheme

Last year, the Government introduced a new grant via the Kickstart Scheme to support the creation of new jobs placements at businesses across the UK. Unfortunately, the rules of the scheme meant that businesses needed to create a minimum of 30 job placements to apply directly for a grant.

This requirement meant that many smaller businesses and startups were ineligible for funding.

However, the Government has now changed the rules for the scheme, which means businesses no longer need to meet a minimum threshold of job placements to apply.

Who can apply to the Kickstart scheme?

The scheme is open to businesses of all sizes and is designed to support the creation of new job placements for 16 to 24-year-olds on Universal Credit, who are at risk of long-term unemployment.

Funding from the scheme covers:

  • 100% of a worker’s National Minimum or Living Wage (depending on the age of the applicant) for 25 hours per week for a total of six months
  • The associated employer National Insurance contributions
  • An employer’s minimum automatic enrolment contributions.

The job placement(s) created must not replace existing or planned vacancies or cause existing employees, apprentices or contractors to lose work or reduce their working hours, but otherwise, businesses are free to hire as they see fit.

With hundreds of young, talented graduates and junior workers now on the market, the scheme offers an excellent way for businesses to grow their team and expertise.

How can startups and businesses apply?

To complete an application, you will need:

  • Your Companies House reference number or Charity Commission number (if you have one)
  • Your organisation’s address and contact details
  • Details of the job placements and their location.
