ScaleUp Institute launches creative industry investment support

A major new resource to showcase the opportunities for investing in the UK creative industries sector is being unveiled at a National launch event on 21st June.

The Invest in Creative Toolkit, an in-depth peer learning platform has been developed by the UKBAA and ScaleUp Institute working with DCMS and the British Business Bank and with the support of the West of England, West Midlands and Greater Manchester Combined Authorities, the toolkit has been designed to increase knowledge and engagement among existing and new investors on the opportunities for investing in creative industries.

The Invest in Creative toolkit combines detailed market intelligence and peer to peer experience and insights on creative industries and the specific subsectors, drawing on the expertise gained from existing investors, industry experts and successful founder case studies. From an expansive view of the high growth potential of the creative sector, to pinpointing the explosive sub sectors putting the UK on the global map, Invest in Creative toolkit equips investors with up-to-date information, guidance and resources to enable them to effectively invest in innovative scaling creative industries businesses.

Culture Minister Caroline Dinenage said: "The creative industries make a huge contribution to our economy and are central to our plans to build back better from the pandemic. The Invest in Creative Toolkit will help increase investor awareness of the enormous potential in the creative industries across the country and support even more businesses to scale-up."

Irene Graham OBE, Chief Executive, ScaleUp Institute, said: “The creative industries are worth £111bn in GVA to the UK economy, with over 1,600 scaleups and scaling businesses generating £43bn in turnover each year. The creative sector is expanding at three times the national average in other industries but creative scaleups continue to face challenges in accessing the capital they need to continue their growth journey. The Invest in Creative toolkit is designed to build investor awareness of the sector through peer experience; encourage more angel and follow-on investors into the sector and shine a light on one of the key high potential growth areas of the UK economy.”

Jenny Tooth OBE, CEO of UK Business Angels Association said: “Scaling businesses in the creative industries offer huge opportunities for investment. Yet many investors have not yet recognised the growth and investment potential of businesses in the sector. With this in mind, we have developed this investor focused toolkit drawing on the experience and in-depth insights of 55 investors, industry experts and successful founders in the creative industries and key subsectors of games, music, media tech and fashion, combined with infographics and downloadable resources. Our aim is to significantly increase the knowledge and understanding of investing in the sector, attracting many more existing investors as well as recruiting new investors to back creative scale-ups here in the UK.
