Planes & Slice partner to power up UK’s first eSIM-only mobile network

Planes, a renowned digital product studio, proudly announced its pivotal role in developing Slice Mobile, the UK’s first eSIM-only mobile network. By crafting the Slice Mobile app, Planes has made eSIM technology more accessible, setting a new benchmark for a streamlined, user-friendly mobile experience.

With 35% of Gen Z expressing dissatisfaction with their current mobile providers, there is a growing demand for alternative solutions. Slice aims to meet this need by offering a fully digital, eSIM-only service that simplifies connectivity and gives users greater control over their mobile experience. eSIM technology allows for easy switching between networks, and Slice differentiates itself by allowing users to shape the network and rewarding loyalty with cashback based on yearly spend, which grows with time.

Mindszi, a company known for launching the world’s first eSIM-only mobile app for the iPhone in 2018, notes that 75% of smartphone users are expected to adopt eSIM by 2030. Despite this, networks face challenges in providing seamless onboarding due to differences in device installation processes.

Working alongside Mindszi, Planes was chosen as a key partner to deliver Slice's app, ensuring a frictionless user experience. Mindszi’s platform integrates with Slice’s systems to manage e-commerce, subscriptions, and network integration, while Planes focused on designing a world-class user experience, making Slice Mobile a leader in eSIM technology.

Rob Brock, Product Director at Slice, comments, “From the beginning, our vision has been to develop a network that not only provides unparalleled service and functionality but also evolves effortlessly with the dynamic needs of mobile users. Planes Studio has been a great partner in helping us bring this to life with their expertise in building digitally native products.”

Brock added, "At Slice, our mission goes beyond delivering exceptional connectivity and a seamless app experience—we’re committed to breaking down barriers for customers who want to engage with us as their mobile network. We view our customers as co-owners, empowering them to actively co-create and shape the network and its features. Our ultimate goal is to establish a community where there is no distinction between 'us' and 'them,' but rather a single community of 'us'."

CJ Daniel-Nield, Co-Founder of Planes, said, “With our experience building category-first products, we knew Slice had a unique opportunity to develop a smart proposition hand-in-hand with modern technology. The Slice app rewards loyalty in a new way, and our goal was to create something that not only works seamlessly but also fosters a strong community, turning users into loyal advocates. We’re so excited to be partnering with Slice as they redefine what it means to be a mobile network in today’s fast-moving market.”

Michael Moorfield, Co-Founder at Mindszi said “Getting rid of the traditional SIM card requires a completely new way of thinking. Combining Mindszi’s deep expertise in eSIM with Planes’ extensive product design experience has created an eSIM-only experience that is simple for customers to understand and connect in just a few minutes.”

As Slice opens doors to founding customers this week, the collaboration between Slice and Planes has resulted in a groundbreaking product that’s ready to shake up the UK mobile network scene. Early customers, known as “Founding Slicers,” can look forward to special perks and benefits as they help shape the future of the network.
