ONE launches EnergyTech Bridge to drive ClimateTech innovation and growth
Opportunity North East (ONE) has teamed up with Barclays Eagle Labs and CodeBase to launch the EnergyTech Bridge Programme, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at supporting businesses in expanding into new markets, scaling internationally, and driving innovation in the transition to cleaner, greener energy through digital technology.
The programme has attracted a record-breaking group of participants, bringing together 27 digital tech businesses, including 22 from north east Scotland, highlighting the region's strong presence in ClimateTech innovation. Joining these local innovators are seven leading international corporations – NOV, Oceaneering, Global E&C, EDF Energy, Scottish and Southern Energy Networks (SSEN), Xodus, and Sellafield Nuclear – each seeking to explore new technologies that can help them meet their net zero targets.
Karen O’Hanlon, Digital Tech Director at ONE, emphasised the significance of the north east's contribution: “North east Scotland hosts one of the largest clusters of energy tech businesses in Europe, with 42% of the region's digital sector focused on EnergyTech. The participation of 22 regional companies demonstrates the strength, ambition, and capability of the north east in driving ClimateTech innovation. These businesses are at the forefront, providing tech solutions in high-growth sectors such as ClimateTech, AgriTech, RegTech, and renewables.”
O’Hanlon also highlighted the programme's approach: “The EnergyTech Bridge programme is vital as it provides an integrated platform for digital tech companies to collaborate with corporates, tackle key challenges, and showcase their solutions. As we push towards net zero, there is an urgent need for innovative products and services, and our region’s digital tech companies are perfectly positioned to respond to global demand, enhance international competitiveness, and stimulate regional economic growth.”
The programme is designed to accelerate growth and innovation by offering tailored support to participating SMEs. This includes expert mentoring, identification of key energy transition challenges, and guidance on pitching to investors and potential customers – fostering a more resilient and forward-thinking tech ecosystem in north east Scotland.
At the programme launch, Glen McLellan, General Manager UK at NOV, expressed his enthusiasm: “It’s inspiring to be surrounded by innovative minds and to learn from SMEs. Mentoring has been crucial in my career, and I am passionate about sharing my knowledge with others. Energy transition is a major focus for us, and it’s exciting to see the new technologies being developed by these brilliant early-stage companies.”
Gareth McIntyre, Director at GDi, shared his perspective on the opportunities for tech businesses in the region: “As an Aberdeen-based tech company, we see great potential in transferring our digital twin technology to other industries, including the utility and renewable energy sectors. The north east has a rich legacy in the oil and gas industry, with some of the best minds in the world. Our expertise in managing critical infrastructure is directly applicable to green energy, and participating in the EnergyTech cohort has already led to significant business growth and new connections.”
Gail Henderson, Founder of DEV4 Online Limited, highlighted the value of the programme in expanding her company’s network and technological capabilities: “Networking is essential for us, and this programme has connected us with experts who have the skills and technology we need. As a software company based in Aberdeen, we are focused on improving operational efficiency and are eager to collaborate with companies moving into renewables. EnergyTech Bridge aligns with our goals of scaling up, enhancing our bespoke software, and supporting sustainable practices in the energy sector.”
The EnergyTech Bridge Programme is set to foster collaboration, drive innovation, and support the growth of digital tech businesses in their journey towards a sustainable future.
