Nila closes oversubscribed $2.4M to simplify cross-border elderly care

Nila, the healthcare management startup helping expatriates care for elderly relatives back home, has closed an oversubscribed $2.4 million (£1.8 million) pre-seed round led by LocalGlobe. The investment enables Nila to scale its revolutionary care management platform which addresses the stress and challenges that accompany overseeing the health and wellbeing of older family members across borders.

With an initial focus on India, Nila is addressing the world’s top receiver of remittance payments. Healthcare takes a large proportion of the $130 billion sent from immigrants to their families back home each year. Nila plans to expand its capabilities across India in the next 12-18 months and enter other Asian markets, like the Philippines, soon after.

Immigrants spend, on average, more than 8 hours per week coordinating care and over $5,000 annually on frequent check-in trips back home, managing care and cross-border payment fees. In the case of an emergency, the on-the-ground medical expenses can exceed $1500. Nila eliminates the challenges of finding a trusted carer and managing senior care from afar easier through a combination of AI, cross-border payments and dedicated in-house carers to establish a new model of remote senior care.

Nila has also developed an in-house certification process that sources, vets and trains local caregivers on geriatric care & safeguarding. “Nila Certified” Carers are dedicated to each customer to manage their care end to end and use the Nila Platform to manage home visits, track medicines, handle transport to medical appointments, and make the payment of medical expenses frictionless for immigrants.

Anthony Jacob, a remittance payments expert previously at Taptap Send and seasoned entrepreneur, was inspired to build Nila when he had difficulty coordinating vaccines and care for his parents in Sri Lanka during Covid. Today, Nila's goal is to create a borderless global health and social care platform that makes it easier and better to care for remote families.

Anthony Jacob, Founder and CEO, Nila, said: “We face an ageing population of huge proportion. The knock-on effect is increased elder dependency on younger generations, often young professionals exploring careers abroad who have to handle care arrangements remotely. At Nila, we are the bridge to that cross-border high-quality care that is smarter, more efficient, and keeps families far away informed of every step. Today’s fundraise is an exciting opportunity to take the next step in Nila’s growth – delivering personalised senior care at scale.”

Nila is already being warmly received by early users having handled over 3000 care requests in the last six months and zero customer churn. Customers in the US and UK spend approximately $100 per month for senior care in and around India, receiving 24/7 care coordination support and easier, faster payments while loved ones receive dedicated care and companionship through partnerships with local health and telehealth providers. Nila’s is already delivering care in 10+ Indian Cities including Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Coimbatore, Ahmedabad, Ludhiana, Kolkata

Julia Hawkins, partner at LocalGlobe added; “Anyone living abroad will know how stressful, worrying and costly it is to care for loved ones from afar. Nila is fundamentally transforming that experience by tackling the toughest challenges – from finding trusted carers to managing clunky payments and getting real visibility into day-to-day care. Nila can’t replace being there in person but it’s already proving that it’s the next best thing: giving families peace of mind as they navigate complex health needs and responsibilities. We’re proud to support Nila in redefining cross-border care.”
