8 out of this world spacetech startups

To celebrate International Day of Human Space Flight, Startups Magazine has rounded up eight of the most inspiring, innovative spacetech startups. From rocket launchers to satellites, incorporating technology from artificial intelligence to IoT, these spacetech startups are reaching for the stars.

Swarm Space

Kicking off with Swarm Space. This startup was founded in 2016 and provides low-cost satellite connectivity for the Internet of Things (IoT). The company's small satellites are designed to provide global coverage for IoT devices. Swarm's satellites orbit at 450-550km altitude, providing global coverage. The satellites are spread out into a series of distributed sun-synchronous orbital planes. This configuration allows the satellites to maintain reliable global network coverage.

Skyrora

Founded in 2017, Skyrora designs, manufactures and deploys rockets to clear the way for small satellite manufacturers looking to access space. It is developing launch vehicle technology to ensure that the life changing benefits of space are realised here on Earth. It uses eco-friendly technologies known as Ecosene and the Skyrora Space Tug.

Orbital Sidekick

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to optimise sustainable operations. Orbital Sidekick is solving the planet’s most pressing operational, environmental and safety problems in real time at scale. It specialises in providing advanced satellite imaging and analytics solutions to businesses and organisations globally.

Moon Express

Moon Express is a private space exploration startup aiming to develop commercial opportunities to the moon. Moon Express is focused on developing technologies and capabilities to enable low-cost and sustainable lunar exploration and resource utilisation. The company has received funding from private investors and has also partnered with NASA to develop lunar exploration technologies. Expect to see its first mission to the Moon in the near future.

Astroscale

Astroscale was founded in 2013 and is focused on developing technology to remove space debris from orbit. The company's goal is to reduce the risk of collisions between satellites and other objects in space.

Relativity Space

Relativity Space is a company that uses 3D printing technology to manufacture rockets. The company aims to reduce the cost and time required to build rockets, making space exploration more accessible.

Momentus

Momentus was founded in 2017 and provides in-space transportation services for satellites. The company's technology allows for the movement of satellites between orbits and the deployment of payloads. The startup plans to offer in-space infrastructure services by building transfer and service vehicles that will carry satellites and hosted payloads between orbits in space.

Accion Systems

Accion Systems is redefining space mobility, driven by innovation through collaboration. The startup manufactures propulsion systems for satellites based on proprietary technology developed at MIT. Its systems address the industry wide issue of having no suitable in-space propulsion options for small satellites, and systems designed for large satellites being cost-prohibitive.
