22% of women in tech feel imposter syndrome hinders their success
A new report from AND Digital reveals that 78% of women leaders in technology roles feel they have succeeded in their careers, with confidence increasing with age. The "Rewards & Resilience" report, which surveyed over 200 women leaders in tech, highlights both the triumphs and challenges faced by women in the industry.
The report found that imposter syndrome is particularly strong early in a career but can persist throughout. Confidence grows with age and experience, especially when taking on new roles. Notably, 80% of women reported facing challenges on their path to leadership, often linked to these feelings of self-doubt.
A significant source of imposter syndrome is related to technical skills, with many women needing to redefine their sense of worth beyond just software engineering capabilities. Contributors emphasised that their success is closely tied to team achievements, whether in leading high-performing teams or guiding teams through transitions. Success is rarely viewed as an individual accomplishment.
Despite these hurdles, the report highlights a positive aspect: 90% of women find their careers rewarding, even as they navigate the complexities of gender bias, underscoring the dual realities women encounter in the tech industry.

It's common for women to feel less confident and proficient enough – it's so common. Yes, we need to stay current and keep learning, but we also have many other skills that make us well- rounded and able to operate at the next level within technology."
'Rewards & Resilience' is the latest in a series of measures by AND to champion the role of women in tech roles. The company is rolling out initiatives to support women in tech, including a dedicated women-in-tech community, the AND She Can programme, and truly flexible working policies.
