Kay Akinwunmi

Kay Akinwunmi, 35, was born in Lagos, Nigeria, and moved to the UK aged 8. Kay studied computing at Southwark College and London Southbank University. After graduation he worked as a consultant for tech start-tups and global brands such as Sky and the UK Labour Party. Growing up, he witnessed the expense and inconvenience his mother endured sending money from London to Lagos, and in 2016 Kay built a remittance bot to identify the best money transfer rates between the UK and Nigeria. This was the beginning of the Zazuu solution, and Kay’s speciality is helping build modern software applications to serve millions of customers. Kay is a graduate of London Southbank University where he studied computing and Southwark College, where he studied software development.

How Black founders can get funding

There are high barriers to funding for Black founders, especially first-time ones. I know this because I’m a first-time Black founder who has raised (and is still raising) money. I’ve made a lot of mistakes, but also a lot of progress. Here’s what I’ve learned along the way.
