Alex Pienaar

Alex joined the Civil Service in 2008 and prior to his current role has worked in a range of policy positions across the Ministry of Justice and Cabinet Office, as well as spending 2 years based in Brussels as the UK Customs & Indirect Tax attaché at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) mission there, just prior to EU Exit. Alex returned to HMRC in 2015 and, with over 10 years’ experience working on customs and border issues, became the Director of Customs Policy & Strategy in January 2024.
