Why ‘resilience’ remains a cornerstone for growth
The latest ONS figures offer little comfort for UK businesses. Unless December’s data delivers significant – and surprising - expansion, the economy will have contracted in the final quarter of last year.

For the tens of thousands of business owners looking to the year ahead, it’s natural to feel uneasy about the outlook. Rising taxes, escalating employment costs, and a lack of clear catalysts for short-term improvement make optimism hard to muster.
Many lay the blame at the feet of the government, past or present. Yet the reality is that many challenges are global in nature, leaving policymakers with limited levers to pull.
This all sounds undeniably bleak. Yet, despite the challenges, there is one trait that unites every UK SME – a remarkable resilience. It’s a quality we’ve consistently witnessed across hundreds of SMEs that BGF has supported since its inception.
Over the past decade, entrepreneurs and business owners have faced crisis after crisis. Brexit, COVID-19, soaring costs, and unrelenting regulatory changes have tested the limits of endurance. Yet time and again, SMEs have shown ingenuity and determination, adapting to survive and even thrive.
This resilience is a reason for optimism. UK entrepreneurs have long been the backbone of the nation’s economic success. Their ability to innovate in the face of adversity is unparalleled. However, resilience alone cannot carry the weight of the challenges ahead.
Small and medium-sized businesses, and the entrepreneurs who drive them, are vital to job creation and innovation. They must be at the heart of any government growth strategy. This means improving access to funding, cutting unnecessary red tape, and investing in regional hubs to unlock talent and opportunity across the country.
Building confidence starts with stability. Clear policy direction, targeted support for high-potential sectors like technology, clean energy, and advanced manufacturing, and fostering pathways to capital are critical steps to ensuring SMEs thrive. These sectors are areas where the UK has the potential to lead on a global stage, but only with the right support.
The stakes couldn’t be higher. SMEs are more than economic engines; they are the heart of our communities and the embodiment of entrepreneurial ambition. They represent the dreams and risks of individuals who create opportunities for themselves and future generations.
It’s time to celebrate our entrepreneurs – their resilience, their ingenuity, and their pivotal role in shaping our economy and communities. By amplifying their voices and giving them the tools they need to succeed, we can ensure that the UK remains a global leader in entrepreneurship and innovation. Together, we can create a future where SMEs flourish, driving growth, and securing prosperity for the generations to come.
