Transport startup issues warning over masks

The Government’s policy on face-masks will create 'misery and confusion' for workers using trains, a transport expert said today. Dash Tabor warned Boris Johnson’s plan to scrap mandatory coverings may also lead to millions of employees steering clear of public transport.

Mr Johnson’s approach ahead of the 19th July unlock has also been criticised by passenger campaign groups and transport workers’ unions.

And yesterday Ms Tabor, Founder of TUBR which helps London Underground passengers plan journeys away from crowds, said: “The overwhelming majority of commuters want to see the rules around face-masks stay in place.

“Almost three quarters of those we recently polled said a removal of the ban would stop them using public transport.  The Government putting it in the hands of passengers is both short-sighted and cowardly.

“It is going to create misery and confusion and could well lead to a toxic environment on trains once we unlock.

“We need clear and strict advice which will help create confidence around our transport network and get people moving again safely.

"It is also vital that employers have a transport network their staff can have confidence in."

According to Tubr, just 13% of people say they currently feel 'relaxed' about returning to work on public transport. More than a third - 35% - say it has left them feeling 'anxious'. While nearly one fifth - 18% - have stopped using trains and buses altogether with no plans to return.

Earlier this month we told the story of how TUBR was created. You can read about it here.

In an interview Dash said ‘lightbulb moment’ came when she was spending yet another morning-journey with her face wedged into a stranger’s armpit.

“I thought there has to be another way,” Dash said. “I thought, In the 21st Century we must be able to make it easier for people to move around and stand back from the crowd.”

Using technology and algorithms her free to download app is already helping Londoners returning to offices following more than a year of homeworking. Hundreds of people commuting in the Capital are now using TUBR. And plans are underway to expand it to other cities including Manchester.

For Dash, 34, helping them feel more confident has become her primary aim.

Dash was educated at the University of South Carolina, USA but moved to London to study for a Masters at Kingston University in City Planning and Sustainable development.

It was during her time working in the Capital that she worked for businesses including Experian, Streetbees, the REaD group and Sainsburys and experienced, first hand, the frustration of crowded London Tubes.

“I dreaded my morning commute,” Dash said. “For years I'd cram on the Northern Line with everyone else just hoping I could get a bit of the aisle where I was less likely to end up with a stranger's armpit in my face.”

Dash started paying attention to what time she'd leave the house and realised that a mere minute made a huge impact on the experience I had on the Tube.

She added: “It sparked a question: Why wasn't data solving this problem for me? Why wasn't there an app telling me how to travel to get the best experience for me?”

Dash started asking around. She conducted surveys. And the results indicated she wasn't the only one who wanted this problem solved.

Working with Nikhil Kanta Tubr’s Chief Technical officer and Kelly Pollard, Tubr’s Chief Customer Officer the trio set about solving the problem.

“We realised early on that access to the data we needed to solve the issue of crowding was non-existent so we started tackling the problem. Crowding on a public transport system presents a unique challenge because the flow of data can be inconsistent and sparse over a period of time. We set out to solve this problem as part of our solution.”

TUBR

Born out of a hatred for busy commutes, the founders wanted to design an app that would help people find the optimum time to travel in order to have the best journey experience. You can view crowd trends over time and receive suggestions for your journey.

The London-based journey app is designed to help you control your Tube experience and plan around the uncomfortable moments associated with using public transport. TUBR's mission is to use data to help address problems faced in everyday life through their unique algorithm which ensures users make smart journey decisions on public transport.
