The silent revolution: why supporting female micro business owners is critical for economic growth
While headlines celebrate female entrepreneurship, there's a concerning trend hiding in plain sight. The percentage of women-led SMEs in the UK has declined from 19% in 2021 to just 15% in 2023. Yet, at a time when nearly half of businesses are turning to freelancers to drive innovation, female micro business owners could be the key to unlocking economic growth.
As the founder of What She Said, I've witnessed firsthand the unique challenges faced by female micro business owners (FMBOs). Our recent survey revealed a pattern that's both concerning and hopeful.
These women aren't just juggling multiple business roles – they're often balancing family responsibilities, managing household duties, and building their enterprises simultaneously. The pressure to "do it all" while maintaining profitability isn't just overwhelming – it's unsustainable.
But there's hope. Our research shows that when FMBOs have access to the right support systems, their businesses thrive. Approximately 70% of our survey respondents highlighted the transformative power of community-based support and peer networking.
As we approach International Women's Day with its theme of #accelerateaction, it's time for female micro business owners to accelerate their own growth. Here are some practical ways to make that happen.
Accelerate your own growth
Perfect your positioning: Clarify your business messaging to make a powerful impact. Knowing exactly what you offer and communicating it succinctly can greatly enhance your reach and effectiveness.
Train an AI tool: Make technology work for you. By training AI tools to handle routine tasks, you can boost your productivity almost overnight, freeing up your time for strategic growth.
Send the Email: Overcome self-doubt by sending that email you've been putting off. Sometimes, the biggest barrier to success is just getting out of your own way.
Harness the Power of Community
Engage in a Skills Exchange: Collaborate with fellow entrepreneurs by exchanging skills, like swapping coaching for marketing expertise. This not only boosts your business skills but also builds valuable relationships.
Ask for an Audit: Have a fellow FMBO conduct a business profile audit. It's a generous gesture that can offer invaluable insights into how your business is perceived online.
Ask for a Referral: Don’t hesitate to ask your network if there’s someone they can introduce you to or might benefit from your services. Often, you’ll be invited to do the same, creating a cycle of mutual support and growth.
Supporting female micro business owners isn't just about equality; it's about a collective push towards economic empowerment. With our mission to support 1,000,000 women by 2035, we're not just building businesses; we're creating a new economic paradigm where women can thrive on their own terms.
By taking these actionable steps, female micro business owners are not only contributing to their own success – they're setting a precedent for equal economic opportunities worldwide. Join us in recognising and supporting these trailblazers on International Women's Day.
