Quandela and Welinq join forces

Quandela, a specialist in European photonic quantum computing, and Welinq, a quantum networking company, have announced a partnership poised to revolutionise the quantum industry.

By integrating Quandela's photonic quantum computing expertise with Welinq's cutting-edge full-stack quantum interconnects technology, the collaboration aims to create custom quantum links for photonic quantum computers, establishing new industry standards and facilitating the development of interconnected and error-corrected photonic quantum computer clusters

To fully realise the potential of quantum computing, Quantum Processing Units (QPUs) must execute algorithms across vast numbers of qubits, necessitating robust error correction. This partnership merges Welinq's advanced quantum interconnects with Quandela's quantum processors, supporting fault-tolerant computing and enabling comprehensive quantum networks that surpass the capabilities of individual chips.

Photonic QPUs, like those created by Quandela, offer substantial benefits due to their modularity, which allows for seamless scalability by integrating additional qubits. Photons, as carriers of quantum information, ensure high-speed data transmission with minimal interference, making photonic QPUs highly efficient for complex quantum computations. Scaling to large numbers of qubits will require the interconnection of multiple independent photonic QPUs, presenting a significant technological challenge.

Efficient quantum memories, forming the basis of full-stack quantum interconnects, are vital for connecting multiple QPUs, regardless of the qubit modality. These interconnects enhance computational power by enabling high-fidelity, low-latency transfer of quantum information between processors. Welinq’s state-of-the-art quantum memories maintain the integrity of quantum information during transmission, essential for developing robust and scalable quantum networks.

This collaboration aligns with Quandela and Welinq's vision to develop comprehensive clusters of photonic quantum computers, offering both hardware and algorithmic advantages over other approaches. This partnership also ties into the recently announced AQADOC project, the world’s largest initiative dedicated to distributed quantum algorithms. Led by Welinq, with Quandela as a key member, AQADOC aims to explore energy-related use-cases and develop next-generation distributed software capabilities, capable of running on interconnected QPUs through the strategic partnership’s hardware developments.

“This strategic partnership with Welinq marks a significant milestone in our quest to scale photonic quantum computing. By combining Quandela's expertise in photonic quantum processors, with Welinq's cutting-edge quantum interconnect technology, we're laying the groundwork for clusters of interconnected, error-corrected photonic quantum computers. This collaboration puts us at the forefront of the quantum revolution, bringing us closer to enable the full potential of quantum computing via networked quantum computers,” said Niccolo Somaschi, CEO and Co-Founder, Quandela.

“Welinq's interconnect technology natively offers compatibility with all existing QPU architectures. We are delighted to partner with Quandela, a recognised leader in photonic quantum computing, to push the boundaries of our full-stack quantum interconnect technology and demonstrate the added value of our solution for scalability and error correction,” said Tom Darras, CEO and Co-Founder, Welinq.
