About:Energy opens advanced battery testing facility in London
About:Energy, an innovator in battery development software, has announced the opening of its new headquarters featuring a state-of-the-art test facility in Southwark, just a few hundred metres from the Thames and the City of London.
The facility is London’s most centrally located battery testing centre, serving as a key hub for About:Energy’s UK and European clients while attracting top talent from the capital. Spanning approximately 3,000ft², the site features a cutting-edge laboratory designed for advanced battery performance testing and research. It provides crucial data and insights to companies in the automotive, aerospace, and aviation sectors, helping them develop battery products more efficiently, while reducing both costs and development timelines.
With capabilities that include battery teardown parameterisation and cell testing up to 1,000A, the facility is equipped to support the advancement of next-generation batteries like solid-state, sodium-ion, and Lithium Iron Manganese Phosphate (LFMP). These emerging technologies demand extensive data collection, helping companies assess their suitability for specific applications.
About@Energy removes the need for expensive, in-house battery testing by giving companies and their engineering teams direct access to world-class battery intelligence and digital models through its software platform, The Voltt. This platform accelerates development timelines by reducing reliance on physical testing, allowing for better battery design.
The Voltt offers a range of simulation products, delivering insights into the thermal, electrical, and degradation behaviours of batteries. These simulations help customers make informed decisions on battery pack development, battery management systems, and warranties.
Gavin White, Co-Founder and CEO of About:Energy said: “We are delighted to open our new battery testing facility, which will allow us to scale our battery testing capabilities and drive innovation across multiple industries. We want to build a new standard for the UK’s battery technology landscape, and this new facility is part of a long-term, multi-million-pound investment strategy over the next five years to support R&D and the commercialisation of leading battery measurement technologies.
“By leveraging our team's experience from building some of the UK’s most advanced labs, including those at Imperial College London and the Warwick Manufacturing Group, we are committed to ensuring the highest levels of efficiency and quality in battery testing.”
The battery testing facility is the headquarters for About Energy’s experienced team, comprising experts with backgrounds from organisations such as Rolls Royce, Mercedes High Performance Powertrains, COMSOL, Aston Martin and Warwick Manufacturing Group. The team also includes leading academics from renowned institutions such as the National Physics Laboratory, Imperial College London, University of Birmingham, and Warwick University.
As part of About:Energy's commitment to minimise its environmental impact, they’ve used waste glass for whiteboards, grid feedback battery cyclers and all the furniture for the new facility has been sourced second-hand to help reduce landfill waste and support a more sustainable approach to outfitting the facility.
The announcement highlights About:Energy’s mission to enhance the UK battery ecosystem, and follows recent news that it has secured £1 million Government funding for battery development.
