Startups Magazine explores supply chain sustainability

Startups Magazine announces the release of its first technical article: ‘Supply chain sustainability for startups: what you need know’.

Sustainability has been a hot topic for a long time, and as time progresses and more regulations are brought in to ensure businesses are making sustainable decisions for the future of the planet, it is no longer something that is just nice to have but is a requirement.

A report published by Deloitte found that supply chains are the primary source of a business’s CO2 emissions. The footprint of this is actually 11.4 times greater than a company’s direct operations. This statistic drives home the fact that establishing a sustainable supply chain is one of the most important steps to take when wanting to improve your company’s sustainability.

Startups are uniquely placed in the industry. The early stages of business may not be forgiving in terms of budgets and how to spend funds but making big swings when it comes to establishing a sustainable supply chain is much easier to do at this stage. When establishing your supply chain, making mindful choices for the environment and people at each stage of the chain is better to establish early on, rather than spending more money to make these adaptations later down the line.

Another positive of establishing a sustainable supply chain early on means there is no playing catch up when regulations become stricter. If established from the onset, you put yourself in a favourable position to continue scaling without issues.

Hopefully, this technical article can inspire you to make more sustainable supply chain decisions and give you some practical advice on the measures you can take to establish a more sustainable supply chain.

I would like to say a big thank you to Douglas Kent, EVP, Corporate and Strategic Alliances at the Association for Supply Chain Management, and Duncan Heron, VP of Marketing at DHL Express UK, for providing invaluable insights into the industry to help shape this article.
