High job satisfaction for women in tech despite widespread gender bias
A new report from AND Digital, titled 'Rewards & Resilience,' highlights the duality faced by women leaders in technology roles: immense job satisfaction coupled with significant barriers. According to the research, 90% of women find their careers rewarding despite an equal percentage experiencing gender bias.
The survey, which included over 200 women leaders in tech, underscores the significant economic opportunities and potential for independence a career in tech offers. Nearly 90% of respondents expressed love for their work, with four out of five feeling successful in their roles. Remarkably, only 3% considered leaving their tech positions.
However, the report also reveals the challenges: 90% of women have encountered gender bias, and over 60% have faced gender discrimination. The pandemic and the rising cost of living have disproportionately affected women, further complicating their professional journeys. Women hold just 24% of tech roles and a mere 5% of leadership positions in an industry with two million vacancies and a £150 billion value to the UK economy.
Despite these hurdles, job satisfaction remains high, with 89% enjoying their work and 79% feeling successful. Yet, resilience is essential; 10% regularly face bias and discrimination, and nearly 80% have struggled on their path to leadership. Women in larger enterprises feel less supported regarding resources and upskilling opportunities compared to those in smaller businesses.
The report is endorsed by Dame Stephanie Shirley, author of 'Let It Go', who commented: "This report celebrates the achievements and accomplishments of senior female professionals; suggests a pathway for more women to achieve senior roles and it provides a roadmap for a more gender-diverse tech industry."
Wendy Stonefield London Hub Executive at AND Digital said: "There's been huge progress if you look at the focus on bringing female talent through organisations. But I think in some cases it is forced, a case of people having to demonstrate progress because clients are demanding it. People need to be much more aware of the cultures they create and recognise that bringing real diversity to the table is no longer optional."
'Rewards & Resilience' is the latest in a series of measures by AND to champion the role of women in tech roles. The company is rolling out initiatives to support women in tech, including a dedicated women-in-tech community, the AND She Can programme, and truly flexible working policies.
