Super6 raises £1.1M breaking new ground in energy storage

UK-based startup, Super6, raises £1.1 million to unlock one of the last foundational technologies of the new global energy system

Super6 is breaking new ground in energy storage with next-generation supercapacitors that promise up to 9.5x higher energy density and 80% lower costs, an essential enabler of the transition to a cleaner, more reliable energy system. The round was led by Sustainable Ventures and joined by Prosemino, Norrsken Evolve, Energy Revolution Ventures, and The Footprint Firm.

Super6’s technology draws upon the team’s combined 85 years of world-leading scientific research in advanced materials and electrochemical devices, alongside 20 years of scale-up expertise, to create both high-performance and economically viable solutions. With these advances they are attempting to build one of the four foundational technologies of the energy transition.

Renewable generation and battery technology are arguably already established pillars in the new world order, but the remaining high power and long duration pillars are still to be built. This is where supercapacitors come in, they are the sprinters of the storage world, capable of charging and discharging at incredible rates. More than that, they can be cycled hundreds and thousands of times, are inherently safe, operate in wide temperature ranges all whilst being free of critical minerals. For these reasons, supercapacitor technology is widely seen as the key to unlock clean power stability; highly responsive power; and access to high power, with use-cases ranging from electrified transport, to datacentres and grid services (inertia and power quality).

Super6’s technological leap has already garnered interest from the prestigious early-stage automotive Mobilise programme in the UK as well as the Shell Startup Engine. This reflects the scale of the opportunity – with the market for supercapacitors estimated to be worth over $30 billion by 2035 accompanied by potential savings of over 1 billion tonnes of CO2 per year.

Super6 CEO, Hector Lancaster, says: "This funding represents a major milestone for Super6 as we continue to innovate at the forefront of high-power energy storage. We are grateful to have such brilliant investors to support our mission to create a viable, high power foundation for the new global energy system.”

Super6 will use the funds to accelerate the commercialisation of its technology, hiring world-class talent and producing its first cells ready for real-world deployment.

General Partner at Norrsken Evolve, Johan Attby, says: “At Norrsken Evolve, we invest in breakthrough technologies that drive long-term resilience and sustainability. Super6 is developing a new generation of supercapacitors that can dramatically improve the delivery of high energy density at low cost – an essential enabler of the transition to a cleaner, more reliable energy system. We’re proud to support a team tackling one of the most critical infrastructure challenges of our time.”
