Pledge to host COP28 round table with Smart Freight Centre

Pledge and Smart Freight Centre are set to host a round table in Dubai, UAE, on the occasion of COP28.

This event aims to unite carriers, freight forwarders, and shippers, facilitating a dialogue on sharing best practices and fostering ideas that will assist companies in achieving their net-zero objectives.

David de Picciotto, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Co-founder of Pledge, remarked: “The OECD has predicted that global logistics emissions are set to increase by 42% by 2050 – the same year the Paris Agreement has tasked the EU to achieve net zero carbon.

“If we’re going to meet this challenging goal, the industry needs to come together and collaborate.”

De Picciotto explained the purpose of the round table: “This is why we’re hosting a round table, to provide a space for open and frank conversation about the best practices for emissions reduction, to clear up confusion surrounding upcoming regulations, and help kickstart the journey for those struggling to know where to begin.”

The round table will also showcase cutting-edge solutions, technologies, and methodologies, such as Smart Freight Centre’s GLEC Framework and ISO Standard 14083, which are instrumental in helping the industry meet its net zero targets.

There is a growing global demand for precise emissions reporting, with more countries poised to enact regulations such as the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), effective from 2024. Non-compliance with these regulations could lead to financial penalties.

Pledge’s emission measurement and reporting platform is pivotal in enabling freight forwarders to supply shippers with GLEC-accredited data. This aids in the development and implementation of sustainability strategies, establishes reduction pathways, and ensures compliance with emissions disclosure regulations.

Sophie Punte, Founder of Smart Freight Centre, stated: “We empower industry leaders to track and reduce their emissions from freight transportation, and help the logistics sector to collectively meet the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals.”

She also mentioned the collaborative nature of the upcoming event: “Our co-hosted round table with Pledge will spark collaboration between logistics stakeholders, giving them the opportunity to discuss common challenges, share implementation success stories, and ultimately create more impact together.”

Smart Freight Centre, an international non-profit organisation, is dedicated to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in freight transportation. It advocates for accredited emissions reporting through its GLEC Framework and ISO Standard 14083.

De Picciotto and Punte will co-host the round table on the transport day at COP28, scheduled for Wednesday, 6th December, in Dubai, UAE.
