Making the right tech choice

Three in four customers believe calls are the most effective way to contact a company, making smartphones a key business tool in all industries. But with hundreds of makes and models on offer, understanding which devices meet your business needs can be tricky.

Here, Kristian Torode, Co-Founder and Director of business mobile device supplier Crystaline, explains what to look for in smartphone specifications to ensure you make the right choice for your business.

When calling customer service, over 50% of clients are irritated if they cannot speak to a real person immediately. This means businesses must ensure their communication capabilities are up to scratch.

Ensuring great customer care even when employees are working from home can be difficult, with almost half of UK consumers reporting the customer service they received worsened during the pandemic. To tackle declining levels of customer care, companies are increasingly investing in business smartphones.

Client calls can be transferred from business phone lines to a mobile, allowing companies to effectively deal with issues and increase customer satisfaction. Smartphones also have other benefits, such as helping to improve internal communication and for creating social media content.

From manufacturing and marketing to engineering and events, all sectors can benefit from investing in smartphones. However, different sectors offer different services, meaning each business will have slightly different requirements when it comes to smartphones.

Although the iPhone 15 release may be a tempting upgrade, the most suitable device may not always be the newest one. To make the right choice, companies should pinpoint what they need from a smartphone, and compare this with specifications from a few different models.

Speed and performance

Regardless of industry, high speed and performance are two key elements to look for in a smartphone. For effective overall performance, it is important that the device has a high processing power. You can find this by looking at the central processing unit (CPU) on the specification, which will have a clock speed measured in Gigahertz (GHz). The higher this number, the faster the phone runs. For effortless multitasking, phones with a high amount of Random Access Memory (RAM) are key, as they can handle more apps running in the background.

Enhanced battery life

Again, this is a vital feature across all sectors, as an unreliable battery stops you making the most of the device’s other features. However, the importance of enhanced battery life depends on the frequency with which certain apps are used. According to Uswitch data, communication apps such as WhatsApp and Gmail, as well as GPS-enabled apps like Uber and Waze, can drain device battery quickly. If you regularly use these apps, it is important to look for a handset with a battery that can store a lot of energy. This is measured in milliampere-hours (mAh), with a higher number signalling higher capacity.

Large storage capacity

For photographers, videographers, and social media specialists, a large storage capacity is crucial. Many models can come in different capacities, such as the iPhone 15 Pro which offers as much as one terabyte (TB) of storage, enough to hold up to 250,000 photos. Some phones also offer the option to expand storage further with a microSD card.

Immersive viewing experience

If staff are only using their phone for voice calls, viewing experience is less important. However, designers or engineers wanting to sketch out their ideas with a computer aided design (CAD) app should look for a larger display size. Additionally, you may want to opt for a higher resolution, such as Full HD or 4k, for sharp text and images.

Excellent camera quality

Finally, for photographers and content creators, the device’s camera quality is key. Although we often hear about megapixels, there are also other important metrics such as aperture size to consider. Smaller sizes capture lighter images with less clarity, while larger sizes result in darker, clearer images.  Additionally, there are other features that can enhance phone performance, such as dust and water resistance and facial recognition.

As the world becomes increasingly connected, businesses need to look for ways to enhance their digital communication capabilities. Having a thorough understanding of business needs and smartphone specifications will allow companies to make an informed decision and choose the perfect device.
