Carbon calculator for software nominated for The Earthshot Prize

GoCodeGreen, the carbon calculation platform for software build and operation, has been nominated for the Earthshot Prize 2023.

Nominated by ClimateUEA, the climate research initiative at the University of East Anglia, GoCodeGreen has been recognised for its innovative solution to decarbonise the ICT sector.

Championed by Sir David Attenborough and Prince William, The Earthshot Prize is one of the world’s most prestigious environmental awards. It celebrates innovations that will repair our planet this decade by providing funding and tailored support for five environmental solutions each year.

As a nominee in the ‘Fix our climate’ category, GoCodeGreen has the opportunity to receive £1 million to scale its carbon decisioning platform for software and accelerate the decarbonisation of the ICT sector.

GoCodeGreen has developed the first and most complete carbon diagnosis and decisioning platform for software, enabling organisations to decarbonise their software and technology. The unique carbon-neutral platform calculates the carbon footprint of any software, from legacy systems to websites and mobile apps, and offers actionable insights for businesses to improve efficiencies, reduce costs, and achieve net zero as part of ESG commitments. As a result, GoCodeGreen’s solution enables organisations to cut a third of their carbon emissions, on average.

The finalists and winners of The Earthshot Prize will be announced later this year.

Eric Zie, CEO and Chief Product Officer at GoCodeGreen, said: “Software runs our digital lives, but a lot of energy is needed to build and operate it. As products and services are rapidly digitised, the ICT sector’s carbon footprint will only grow, with it already producing 2.5% of global emissions – more than the aviation industry. It’s therefore urgent that we decarbonise the digital world in which we now live.

“We have already made incredible progress since launching our platform less than a year ago, helping businesses to identify opportunities to reduce their carbon impact by 56%. That’s the equivalent of reducing 6,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions or saving over £3 million. Our nomination for The Earthshot Prize by Climate UEA offers the opportunity to further scale our platform at speed to decarbonise as many digital products as possible in order to fix our climate and repair the planet.”

Dr Colette Matthewman, UEA Relationship Manager for Research and Innovation, comments: “GoCodeGreen is leading in an otherwise unserved space which has huge potential for climate impact. We believe that by assisting businesses to uncover the hidden carbon emissions in their supply chain, CoCodeGreen can make a real difference where the consumption of energy through technology is concerned. UEA are extremely pleased to be nominating GoCodeGreen for the Earthshot Prize 2023.”
