Anthropic announces potential IPO

Anthropic, the AI startup behind the Claude chatbot, has filed papers detailing plans to sell shares to the public for the first time.

The filings suggest that Anthropic will debut next month and is set to be the biggest ever initial public sale of stock.

The financial disclosures reveal a loss in the first six months of the year, while just two unnamed customers accounted for nearly a quarter (23%) of the company’s revenue.

No single customer represented more than 10% of revenue for the nine months up to September; the top five customers represented approximately 25% of revenue for the period, the company said.

This has raised concerns over how AI growth may be overly dependent on a handful of major companies. The company’s 400-page prospectus also includes 94 pages dedicated to AI risk factors.

Revenue reportedly grew by 1,300% in the six months to 30 June 2026, bringing in $16.3bn.

Anthropic has commented that they cannot assure revenue will continue to grow.

Anthropic was founded in 2021 by Jack Clark, Dario Amodei, and Daniela Amodei. The startup has attracted major investors such as Amazon, Google, Lightspeed Venture Partners, and Iconiq Capital.

The announcement comes several weeks after Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon spoke to BBC News about the dangers of AI to humanity, the rapid pace of development, and growing demands for its regulation.

However, some industry figures have argued that warnings about AI’s dangers are overstated and may contribute to the hype surrounding the technology. The debate raises a broader question for investors: whether the industry’s rapid growth can be sustained while its financial, technological and societal risks remain uncertain.
