Group14 secures €150M funding extension to expand silicon battery materials production in Spain

Group14 Technologies has raised a further €150 million ($169 million) in equity funding, taking its Series D round to more than $665 million and paving the way for a new 10 GWh manufacturing facility in Spain.

The US-based battery materials manufacturer will build its latest Battery Active Materials (BAM-4) facility in Sagunto, Spain, marking its first industrial-scale production site in Europe.

The investment, provided by a new undisclosed investor, will support the expansion of production of Group14’s silicon battery material, SCC55. The company said the Spanish facility would initially have an annual production capacity of 10 GWh.

The expansion forms part of Group14’s plans to establish a global manufacturing network, with its combined near-term capacity expected to reach 40 GWh across sites in Europe, Asia and North America.

Its BAM-3 facility in Sangju, South Korea, is already operational and scaling production, with an initial capacity of 10 GWh. Meanwhile, two manufacturing modules at BAM-2 in Moses Lake, Washington, are expected to begin production in the first half of 2027, adding a further 20 GWh of capacity.

Group14 has also operated its BAM-1 commercial pilot facility in Woodinville, Washington, since 2021. The site has supplied SCC55 materials to more than 150 customers.

The decision to establish production in Spain reflects the company’s strategy of locating manufacturing capacity close to major battery and automotive markets. Spain is Europe’s second-largest automotive manufacturing country, providing access to established original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and battery supply chains.

Group14 said the European facility would help strengthen supply chain resilience, reduce reliance on geographically concentrated production, and provide local support to customers across the region.

“To truly transform the energy economy, battery material producers must be located where the batteries are made,” said Rick Luebbe, CEO and Co-Founder of Group14 Technologies.

“Our expansion into Spain reflects our vision: staying nimble, building near key customer hubs, and maintaining secure, localised supply chains.”

The company is targeting significant growth in demand for silicon-based battery materials across several industries, including automotive, consumer electronics, data centres, aerospace, and defence.

Its flagship SCC55 material is designed to improve battery performance and has already been deployed in applications ranging from smartphones and drones to high-performance vehicles and electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.

Group14’s technology portfolio is supported by more than 200 patents. The company said it ultimately aims to establish hundreds of gigawatt-hours of manufacturing capacity over the next decade, as demand for advanced battery materials continues to grow.
